Bearded devils, or barbazus, serve as Hell's elite shock troops leading hordes of the damned into combat for their infernal masters.
Bearded devils are roughly humanoid in appearance although they would never be able to pass for human. Designed for battle bearded devils are heavily built and strong, they fight in a stooped over position bowed under the weight over their own muscles. They are six foot tall when stood up straight but appear shorter because of their stance. They are covered in thick scales which provide protection equivalent to heavy armour that helps them survive Hell's battlefields. This thick armour means they weigh upwards of two hundred pounds. Their most famous feature is the beard for which they are named, it is made of sharpened, dirt encrusted tendrils which twitch and move of their own accord. One tactic used often by bearded devils is to grab their opponent and pull them in close then flay them with their sharpened beard. The other infamous part of their appearance is the serrated glaives that bearded devils use in battle, this vicious looking weapons allow them to reach opponents from behind their own troops.
Habitat & EcologyEdit
Bearded devils can be found anywhere where battle is drawn in Hell, this most commonly means the first layer of Avernus but can mean anywhere. Each bearded devil has to visit Erebus at least once for their trademark glaives are kept in infernal armouries there, they often also train in Erebus's darkened vaults while vast armies of bearded devils can be found endlessly training throughout the bolgias of Malebolge. They are also often found serving spellcasters and worshippers of Asmodeus on the Material Plane where they make ruthlessly effective soldiers. Spellcasters normally offer a bound and helpless captive for a bearded devil to slaughter during their summoning as it makes the bearded devil more likely to comply. Bearded devils all worship or at least pay some sort of respect to Barbatos the mysterious Archdevil of Avernus. Bearded devils are normally created from lemures the process is agonising and unpleasant. The prospective bearded devil is impaled alive on a spiked glaive and left there for decades, the transformation is complete when the devil finally has the strength, will and self control to pull themselves free of the glaive.
