Open Design was founded in 2006 by veteran game designer Wolfgang Baur. The company is known primarily for the quarterly gaming magazine Kobold Quarterly as well as ongoing patronage projects. Open Design has won a number of ENnie Awards for the magazine, a number of patronage projects, and the KQ website itself.
On August 30, 2009, author Brandon Hodge announced that his proposed patronage project, From Shore to Sea, had been approved by Paizo Publishing to utilize their Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting as the adventure backdrop. This is the first adventure to be designed for the setting through the patron model. The book is set to be released by Paizo as part of their Pathfinder Modules line in 2010.
