Forums: Grand Lodge > PRPG vs PFRPG

We should be uniform in how we abbreviate Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Obviously, the "RPG" part is easy. But should we list it as PFRPG or PRPG? This will be used mostly in product categories and infoboxes, but could also appear in the bodies of articles after the full name has been used once. With our new bots, we should be able to run a replace script and seek out anything different from our selected standard, but the sooner we set that standard the less inconsistencies we will face later.

I say PFRPG, if only for the fact that there are other RPGs that start with P that are popular (pandimonium and palladium come to mind)

I'll also put in my vote for PF, though I suppose that strictly speaking PRPG would be more correct (since Pathfinder is one word).

Yeah, but so is "roleplaying"...
yoda8myhead 15:40, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Ah yes! Definitely PFRPG then.

I like PFRPG.

So, it seems like we've pretty much come to a consensus, and yoda8myhead has already gone ahead and harmonized our usage. However, there is a discussion about this very topic on the Paizo boards. Of particular note is this post by James. Does this change our minds? Should we wait to see how the Paizo discussion turns out? We can make a change pretty easily now with the bots, but I'd rather not see us flip-flopping too often.

The existence of other RPGs starting with P &c. are a good reason to use PFRPG or PfRPG. The internal Paizo abbreviation is not official and will not appear in print. It seems like PFWiki's abbrevation should more closely match fan use, since many of the users of the wiki will also be reading in gamer forums, where the fan acronym will be more common.

I agree that we shouldn't flip flop on our usage, as easy as changing it may be with the bots. I also don't think we have to use the same acronym as Paizo uses. We don't need to toe the Paizo line on everything, especially something as trivial as this. I doubt anyone on the Pathfinder wiki will confuse the PF in PFRPG and think it stands for "Palladium Fantasy." If our chosen nomenclature starts causing extreme confusion or trouble for users, we can revisit it, but I don't think we need to worry about it at the moment.

For what it is worth, Paizo are listing compatible products as (PFRPG) in their catalogue. That is about as official as it gets. And with people needing to search for that, they are likely to use that.

Perhaps this should also be added to the Manual of style?
